WANDERER (November 2014)

Wanderer re-imagines ‘the return home’ embodied by military personnel engaged in the ten-plus year conflict in the Middle East as part of a long narrative of our country’s military history. Using archival audiovisual materials and the exploration of classical texts such as Homer’s The Odyssey, Tennyson’s Ulysses, and the War Poets, 3rd Law investigates the chilling relevance of reoccurring historical themes that whisper truths we strain to hear. Movement, video, spoken word, soundscape and scene give a three dimensional view on ‘those who wait’ — the partners, children and families of the wanderers who are forever changed by proximity to perilous situations.

Wanderer was sponsored by The Dairy Center for the Arts for ‘Veterans Speak’, a two-week event at The Dairy in honor of Veterans.

ROOF (June 2014)

Roof (Over Our Heads) is an evening of repertory celebrating 3rd Law’s home, The Dairy Center for the Arts. The Dairy has been an incubator for many small non-profits; a space to create work, hold rehearsals, offer classes and perform. We are thankful for what they have provided and how they have contributed to the growing cultural landscape of our community.

Guided by 3rd Law artistic co-directors Katie Elliott and Jim LaVita, this foundational collection of movement vignettes represents the wide range of movement vocabularies, musical styles, and collaborations that 3rd Law has premiered during their tenure at The Dairy.

OBSTINATE PEARL (March 2014)

A collaboration with Boulder Bach Festival music director/electric violinist Zachary Carrettin where the intersection of composition and improvisation was made visible.

Driven by the transcendent music of J.S. Bach, this evening is rife with dramatic moments created by the duel of sound and movement. Dancers and musician moved through time drawing the listener/viewer forward from the seventeenth century into the modern era through the choice of musical works including the Biber Passacaglia from the Mystery Sonatas, Bach’s Cello Suites and Chaconne, and two original works by Carrettin.

As a style, Baroque is defined by the use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements. The word ‘baroque’ can also refer to a “rough, elaborate or imperfect pearl.” Adding ‘obstinate’ to our title creates another layer, one that emphasizes the rebellious qualities involved in bringing classical forms into contemporary realms, and improvising against the structure set by a strong musical bass line (a characteristic of baroque music). The space in between notes and the breath of a measure becomes flexible, determined by the live, in-the-moment, unspoken dialogue created uniquely each evening between Carrettin and the dancers. Just as the music is composed, the dance is choreographed, but inside that architecture is the inhalation and exhalation of live performance.

Some baroque pearls emerge from salt water and some from fresh but our guiding metaphor is an ‘obstinate’ pearl emerging from a brackish habitat in the middle, where something different grows—and is seen as perfect, exactly because of it’s beautiful imperfections.

This evening was presented by The Dairy Center for the Arts and marked the opening of the Inaugural Year for Boulder Arts Week.

TRANSIT OF VENUS (January 2014)

An orginial piece commissioned by Front Range Women in the Arts for their 40th Anniversary Exhibition at RedLine Gallery in Denver, Colorado.Named for the Colorado region in which they lived and work, Front Range Women in the Visual Arts was founded in 1974 by a group of artists and graduate students at the University of Colorado, Boulder (CU), at a turning point in the history of women in the arts when female artists began seeking greater visibility and validation among the mainstream art world. After conducting a series of interviews with some of the FRWA original members, choreographer Katie Elliott created a sound montage of these women’s voices to layer with the choreography that was built around their guiding principles of a cooperative environment. This piece began as an improvisation in and amongst the gallery attendees and culminated into a piece in the center of the gallery to honor what these women have contributed to the region.

Transit of Venus was the 1st exhibition in She Crossed the Line, a series of 5 exhibitions put together by RedLine Gallery honoring trailblazing women artists who have been instrumental in laying the foundations of contemporary art.
